Montana has rolled out two major updates that could affect your property tax bill — both now and in future years:
1. 2025 PROPERTY VALUE ASSESSMENTS
As of July 1, the state began mailing updated property appraisals for 2025, which is part of the re-appraisal process that occurs every two years. These notices are being sent out by region, so yours may already be in-hand or arriving soon.
What to Do:
Carefully review the assessed value of your property. If the number feels too high or doesn’t reflect recent comps in your area, you have the right to appeal — but you’ll need to act within 30 days of the notice date.
How to Appeal:
- Visit propertyappeal.mt.gov
- Fill out Form AB-26
- Include comparable sales (we’re happy to help gather those)

2. NEW TAX LEGISLATION IN EFFECT FOR 2025–2026
Recent legislation is reshaping how property — especially second homes — is taxed in Montana. This may affect both how your taxes are calculated and what relief may be available.
Montana Residents: To qualify for potential resident tax rates and refunds, make sure to file the new Homestead Exemption Form which will be released on August 15 (Due by October 1, 2025).
